tawakaal-copy
Trees Die Standing

This original piece carries a heaviness. The red print is the impression of a felled Monterey Cypress trunk, paired with traced Arabic calligraphy reading تموت واقفة, which translates to “die standing”, in allusion to “Trees die standing.” This expression first appeared as the title of a play by Spanish playwright Alejandro Casona. In Arabic, it is often tied to resistance and resilience, especially in the context of Palestine.

I took the imprint of the felled Cypress because its spirit still haunts the land. A land “manicured” by those who do not listen to it. The white space in this work offers room to breathe and confront. Though felled, the Monterey Cypress still stands in silence.
__________________
Edition: Original, one of a kind artwork
Size: 22” × 30” in (55.9 × 76.2 cm)
Paper: BFK 100% cotton, neutral pH, made in France
For complete artwork specifications, see the accompanying images (Artwork Specifications letter)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/5077/0515/files/1757983113605_b59adad0-42a4-4361-a035-685facfc6601.jpg?v=1758071002
